The insanity of this World

Not trying anything.
I have numerous personal friends that are officers as well.
I just think it’s a bit narrow minded to think that someone that has trained in mental health could just easily walk into an officers job without additional training, and assuming that they would have the mental fortitude for it.

Quite a few do. They take the course for policing and wind up in group homes or day programs until they get on a police service or into corrections. Nothing narrow-minded about it.

That is being tried in some major cities, Toronto included, with a certain amount of success. The main problem is there are not enough of them to get to every mental health call. Mental health is a complex issue that requires the involvement of multiple entities, and the police are involved in 30,000 calls each year, 6000 of these calls are covered by hybrid units of mental health worker and cop. A suggestion has been to have a number besides 911 for mental health calls and more hybrid units to be able to respond to these calls. There also needs to be more facilities to handle a mental health crisis on their own similar to the successful program with the Gerstein Centre and their rapid response team. We just need more. Get the money from the cop budget. Use cops for other calls, because most cops really do suck with mental health crisis intervention.

And they’re usually the first to admit it!

I’ve never met one that wants to attend anything to do with anyone in crisis.

The term "Defund the Police" isn't what Tucker leads you to believe. It's about moving away from the narrow conception of public safety that relies on policing and punishment and instead spend the money on programs that can help reduce crime. Overall it will reduce the responsibility of the police so they don't need to do things like responding to homeless, mentally ill, chase stray dogs or anything else where you don't need to show up with a gun to resolve the problem. This will allow police to focus on real crimes. Of course, there will be pushback on the issue as I'm sure the cops love their fat budget. I did notice someone posted a pic of the LA Police station, shit is crazy. The police are slowly turning into the army, why? Because they have the money to do it.

I'm not saying I'm 100% down with the idea, but the system is pretty broken. I do believe the police get too much vs some of the other programs that take cuts or cut completely.

As per usual, one side grabs hold of a phrase to rally behind that is twisted and skewed to their favour.

edit: perhaps someone has mentioned this already.. didn't see we were 3 pages deep already.

The cops show up for stray dogs in Winterpeg? No dog catchers?
The narrow concept of public safety?
Do the cops arrest the mentally ill if they are not committing crimes?
Possibly if they are wandering in the middle of an intersection.
They try to detain them and they possibly become confused and react violently.
Cops move to control the situation.
Police brutality accusations follow.
In some places the police need to be at least as well equipped as the bad guys.
Cartel profits buy a lot of guns.

I heard from a young native guy that cartel types were visiting the reserves around Brandon which is not that far from you.
Certainly their activity has been noticed in Winnipeg eh?

Easy targets I suppose.
They are identified as Mexicans although for sure they are recruiting locals.
So now people have meth problems as well as alcohol.
This kid moved off the reserve with his wife and child because the situation had become so bleak.

Trump telling the mayor of Seattle to take back his city or he will on Twitter.

I'm talking about the US, its common that the task has been unloaded on the cops.

Do the cops arrest the mentally ill if they are not committing crimes?
The point is, it may be more beneficial for a trained professional to deal with someone with mental illness. The cops aren't trained, nor should they be, for this task.

They try to detain them and they possibly become confused and react violently.

Then they would call the cops, but more times then not the situation can be de-escalated without the need of guns and force. Which leads into your next statement.

Cops move to control the situation.
Police brutality accusations follow.

Exactly, there are many cases where it's not needed. Aggression brings out aggression in people.

In some places, the police need to be at least as well equipped as the bad guys.
Last I checked the bad guys didn't have tanks. How much is a tank? 1 mil? 2? These tanks are not useful. How often are they used? For the most part, they seem to be used as a visual deterrent, which seems like a lot of money to spend for that. Perhaps that money is best spent elsewhere. Hence, defund the police.

no, to be honest, I haven't heard anything about it. Winnipeg in general is a little bit gangster. Always people claiming they are from glam gangs in the states. Bloods, Crypts M13 and so on. I'm doubtful any of these organizations have their eyes set on Winnipeg.

Oh my fucking God
When will it end
We need more programs for this for that, funding out the ass for every squeaky wheel.
How about people start taking accountability for their own lives.

Yes some are too far mentally gone to do this.

But my God all you hear about is funding funding funding
The only ones who don’t see funding
White conservative males

Ok no problem....everyone sit on your ass, complain about how hard the world is and you need to be funded, or recognized, awareness bla bla bla
Us white males will work, everyone else stay home cry the fucking blues, we can pay 98 percent tax on everything we make. Entire society can shit on us like they do. And everyone will be happy

Are you sure the tank was not equipped with a battering ram?
Takes out heavily reinforced steel door and frames.

I just get a kick out of the fact that all whites are racist. The majority of the American population is white and they just had a black man for two terms. Even after he was proven to be a criminal during the first term. Now thats what i call racism.
lol
Still wondering what Obama did for the black community?
