I hear your frustration brother...
I've seen how doctors treat my wife and she gets crazy fast action for anything. They get her testing that she honestly doesn't even need lol..
Then when I walk in, its like I'm treated like a dumb ass, hypocondriact etc.. It's night and day different level of care me and her get. Comical almost.
Don't get me wrong, I've had some amazing doctors, but as a whole not many provided the level of care which their contract and proffesional obligation states they must do. I've got a couple crazy stories about terrible doctor experiences I've had in the last few years I could share, but truthfully I'm still so frustrated and done with the medical system here that I don't have it in me to type it out...
I will say a couple things though.
1) getting aggressive in terms of sticking up for yourself often works wonders. One time I went to ER because I think my foot was broken. They did a couple movement tests on me and said my ankle was sprained (what the fuck? lol).... They told me to go home and rest. I told the doctor "Nope.. not leaving until I get an x ray..".. The doctor laughed and said take some advil and stay off it for a couple days.. I told her she isn't understanding me when I tell her I'm not leaving without an xray.. The head of ER came into my room and he told me the same thing the doctor said which was sprained ankle and go home.. Again I said "I know what a fucking sprained ankle feels like and this isn't it.. x ray my foot and I'll go home".. They finally did and although it wasn't broken, I didn't find out until 2 days later I had severe gout (which feels like a shattered foot).. My friend diagnosed me and gave me some of his gout pills and I was fine.. fucking dumb ass doctors shoudl be able to diagnose gout very very very easily.. especially the way my foot looked.
2) Yes our system sucks balls in many ways, but at least if you have no money you can still get care and often very very good care.. So although your mom is being treated like shit, there are very good things about our medical system.
3) I believe Canada should allow private clinics that are pay per service. We have some, but I'd like to go to a system that I can choose free public health care or pay for private for every medical condition. This way if your broke, you still get the same level of care we have right now, but if you got some money you can also get faster medical care and the option to pay for treatment your free doctor doesn't think you should get (like your mom).. This would be an ideal system, but our government would fuck it up and eventually turn it into all privte health care.
I hear ya
I have thr same experiences as well.
I get it... I just wish I could opt out of OHIP
I do well enough that i could afford insurance.
On average a middle class Canadian paying 3k for OHIP (for example... I'm unfamiliar with other provincial costs, so I wont comment on them)
amy uncle pays 6k for Him, his wife ans 2 kids.
The service he gets is exceptional (North Carolina).
I'm okay with paying good moneyfor good service.
I'm not okay with paying good money for shit service.
I understand that I'm helping support my fellow Canadians, I'm coolwith that.. but there needs to be a serious overhaul.
I know a few docs, they are afraid to order tests or send people to specialists... admins crucify them and interrogate them at every move.
We need to listen to our front line medical staff and make changes.
