Our dying medical system and its prioritization

Fucking Rant time.
Our medical system in Canada is in such rapid decline.
We prioritize the absolute silliest stuff.
Want to be a man?
Perfect, no problem.
Want bloodwork for my health? Nope

My mom just got diagnosed with a rare bacterial condition...
Unfortunatly she is allergic to the antibiotics required to treat the condition.
What her Doctor said to her.

"So, these pills could cause an allergic reaction and potentially kill you... may want to be prepared and close to a hospital for 1 month"

She could die at any time if she takes it.

The alternative, she stays in the hospital for IV antibiotic treatment, where if there is any reaction, she can be administered the drugs and will be fine.
3 days later, perfectly healthy.

The Doctor said "Sorry, a hospital stay cant be justified in your case"

Yet we will give someone a sex change and surgery at the drop of a hat.

Friend of mine is a paramedic... he administered Narcan to the SAME junkie, 5 times in one day.
3 of which, were outside the front door of the hospital...
The junkie literally walked outside from being clinically dead... banged more heroin... and died again.
Wash rinse and repeat.

I'm sending my Mom down to the states for treatment, I've given up on our system.

End rant lol

Our system is broken but we still have some good docs, thank fuck, and good people working in it.
The US has incredible health care if you have incredible amounts of money which I know first hand and some of my family is from the US. If you have health coverage it’s ok, without - prepare to go bankrupt if you get very sick.
I hear ya and I don’t disagree BTW - but I will say when I needed health care it was pretty decent albeit it should be since the Gov takes 51% of every dollar I make.
I’ve been in meetings with doctors and they are at the door with their hand on the doorknob and I politely ask the to sit and listen to me as I paid for the visit and they got what I meant. I also had to corner cancer docs in the hospital as they tried to rush around me when they wouldn’t help my mom - I’m ranting and will shut up now.

That's what this section is for Bro! lol.

I dont disagree, I'm all about helping my fellow Canadians, and we cant do that with the American system...
It's just frustrating for the insane amount of taxes I pay.
Iver 50%.... then HST and Capital gains on my investments (fuxking 50% off anything extra I make)
You'd think of earnest the right to not be completely ignored when my family needs help.

That Narcan shit is the biggest waste of money ever. If the junkies want one they should buy one themselves. Paramedics are overburdened bringing the same people back week after week.

How is your Mom today?

While I have empathy for your frustration, I’m sure it has saved the lives of many people who took something and didn’t know it was laced with fentanyl or a strong opioid. Kids / young people experiment just as many did and today a pill can be full of anything. One mistake and those people don’t deserve to die so I disagree, Narcsn is not a waste of money.

I don’t disagree with the frustration of the general use of the medication but that isn’t s simple subject either, and if you read my posts I don’t enjoy any arguments, just a different perspective.

Not sure if you can do this in your situation but can you see a different doctor?
I’ve seen different doctors for different reasons and some don’t care about the patient at all. If I find a doctor that isn’t helping me, I find a new one who will and I’ve found many good doctors over the years.
That being said, I hope your mother is okay

Thanks bro.

That's what we are doing as well, while we book things down in NY state.
Medical system is a joke now, over stressed with too many admins.
Docs are afraid to give their patients care, in case they get investigated.

I have q few docs I can go to for second and third options, it's just a sick joke that we have to go through this nonsense

Shes a helluva a tough 70 yr old, will take a lot more than this to put her downll

Good, weve got her on the best care and consults that money can buy.
It's just frustrating that I'm not even allowed to throw money at the problem to get her proper care
Here you - I can relate and sorry for the issues you are going through. Hope all works out for the best,

You shouldn't have to. I'm thinking your Doc isn't looking at the situation seriously enough. You could have been referred to an infectious disease specialist quite easily.

Hey @Bagua - we have one for this entire province so if you have an infectious issue or antibiotic resistant bacteria, it isn’t always simple, wish it was as the doc is gem. Other larger provinces probably have more and is a logical referral.

Every hospital has one. They are needed to combat the prevalence of Healthcare-Associated Infections which are the most frequent form of an adverse event in hospital settings. 8000 people die each year in Canada from HAI and another 200,000 get nailed with them. Some hospitals are better than others, but each hospital needs a team, or people would be dropping like flies. Sort of like the olden days when I was a kid. ;)
My puny little city has five Docs in the field.

We have two real hospital and a few pseudo hospitals and one ID doc for the province. I know him and I don’t think he gets to sleep.

Even in Ontario, we dont have e ough infectious disease specialists.

A friend of mine was literally dying in Lindsay hospital from a FAST infection (scrapped his shin in the morning, by 4pm, it was so swollen that his skin had cracked open like a sausage on the BBQ....I would post pics.... but its fucking gross)

Took them 3 days to get a specialist in to see him... by then he was going septic... guy is a tough old prick... barely made it out alive.

Even in a life or death scenario... no one had time to help.

Doc wanted to take the leg, but it was too late and the infection had spread, aggresive antibiotics for 3 weeks and a transfer to TO is what saved him..

If anyone is curious, PM me... I'll send ththe pic.... but be warned.... it's seriously messed up lol

They screwed up. I know Lindsay and they could have done much better than that with NF. The transfer took far too long. He should have been in Sunnybrook the day he came in with the symptoms he had. The infections that we get outside of the hospital are often more serious than those we get in the hospital.
Do we have enough Emergency Infectious specialists is the question you should be asking in this case?
We have plenty in TO alone:

I hear your frustration brother...

I've seen how doctors treat my wife and she gets crazy fast action for anything. They get her testing that she honestly doesn't even need lol..

Then when I walk in, its like I'm treated like a dumb ass, hypocondriact etc.. It's night and day different level of care me and her get. Comical almost.

Don't get me wrong, I've had some amazing doctors, but as a whole not many provided the level of care which their contract and proffesional obligation states they must do. I've got a couple crazy stories about terrible doctor experiences I've had in the last few years I could share, but truthfully I'm still so frustrated and done with the medical system here that I don't have it in me to type it out...

I will say a couple things though.

1) getting aggressive in terms of sticking up for yourself often works wonders. One time I went to ER because I think my foot was broken. They did a couple movement tests on me and said my ankle was sprained (what the fuck? lol).... They told me to go home and rest. I told the doctor "Nope.. not leaving until I get an x ray..".. The doctor laughed and said take some advil and stay off it for a couple days.. I told her she isn't understanding me when I tell her I'm not leaving without an xray.. The head of ER came into my room and he told me the same thing the doctor said which was sprained ankle and go home.. Again I said "I know what a fucking sprained ankle feels like and this isn't it.. x ray my foot and I'll go home".. They finally did and although it wasn't broken, I didn't find out until 2 days later I had severe gout (which feels like a shattered foot).. My friend diagnosed me and gave me some of his gout pills and I was fine.. fucking dumb ass doctors shoudl be able to diagnose gout very very very easily.. especially the way my foot looked.

2) Yes our system sucks balls in many ways, but at least if you have no money you can still get care and often very very good care.. So although your mom is being treated like shit, there are very good things about our medical system.

3) I believe Canada should allow private clinics that are pay per service. We have some, but I'd like to go to a system that I can choose free public health care or pay for private for every medical condition. This way if your broke, you still get the same level of care we have right now, but if you got some money you can also get faster medical care and the option to pay for treatment your free doctor doesn't think you should get (like your mom).. This would be an ideal system, but our government would fuck it up and eventually turn it into all privte health care.
