What exercise other than the Squat helped your Squat Max the most?

My lower back always use to be my achilles heel. Before I started into powerlifting I use to have my back go out every 3 months or so and it would take 1 - 3 weeks to get it feeling good again. Even the chiropractor could not work the impingement out all that well. Once I started powerlifting I tried a number of exercises to strengthen the lower back and the posterior chain and the one I found helped the most and increased my squat significantly was bent leg good mornings with a straight bar, cambered bar and smith machine. Keeping my back straight and my chest and head up, pushing my ass back as far as I could would result in bending at the knees and my chest moving downward putting a lot of stress on the lower back glutes and hamstrings. Once I got down as far as possible and safe(back not rounding) I would push up on the bar with my traps and thrust my hips forward. I use to do these a lot. Never had a back impingement for years once I started doing these. Once I stopped doing them that was another matter. The best set I have done with these going fairly far back with the ass was 3 reps with 455. I use to work up for a work set 2 -3 with a bit over 400 most times when I used them in my routine... enjoyed doing this exercise,,, always have.
 
Hack squats, weighted GHRs, adductor and abductor machines. Also increasing the frequency of these movements and dropping the volume is what I found helped most.

GHR's are fantastic ... I would say the was my second best assistance exercise ... use to use different thickness of bands tie them around a 100lb dumbbell on the floor.. wrap around my neck to add tension at the top
 
Personally I found trap bar squats helped me greatly when i would hit a plateau.
Never ever tried one of those... not sure why. The gym didn't have one but I had bought most other bars for my gym. That might be an elderly way of doing squats as well too. Going to look on amazon to see what they have. thanks for the suggestion

I am a huge fan. I do them on alternate leg days from squats. Definitely helps with leg and overall strength. Plus does not compress the spine the same way squats do. I do use straps for my top set or two.

It’s honestly worth it. You can get the squat attachment threw titan for the car rack. And work your way up to sedans.

I have tried them but I did not find they helped that much and really only hit the lower back... Took hams and glutes out of the equation. If u do not keep your core tight of don't sit down on bench lightly yep I would say u could cause some harm.
 
sand bag carries are tough ... up stairs would be brutal

Very brutal but just as effective. 60 seconds in and we’d start to balance and forced to form a perfect posture. Could barely walk for two days in a row. Quad’s, shoulders, and back will burn like a motherfucker
 
Personally, I found pin squats and pause squats to help the most. Really taught me to keep tension at the bottom of the squat instead of rushing into then bouncing out of the hole. SSB good mornings have definitely played a huge part for me as well.
 
Top
