I was play sparing with my grandson and was really frustrated that I have lost the ability to predict a punch and move out of the way.
Naw I just suck. It’s been 30 years since I trained.Maybe your grandson moves in a very beginner like manner? Often we get used to the orthodoxy of movement.

Can’t counter punch either.
I hung a punching bag in the garage, been working on it, going thru the old drills, even started skipping again,
I’m using it as cardio. Way more fun than a treadmill.
I didn't want to say you suck. Skipping is one thing I really miss.
I don’t know about suck. You should think more positive about yourself I think anything is possible if you work hard at it. I mean look at me I have four split desks my bones are disintegrating but I go to the gym every other day and I don’t let anything stop me. Attitude has a lot to do with accomplishments.Naw I just suck. It’s been 30 years since I trained.

Yeah, never thought of that. When being taught it was relayed to us that we needed to be flexable to kick high.@Sorbate You don't need to do the splits to be able to kick high. What you can stretch in a static position has very little to do with your dynamic potential of flexibility. Don't even try until your cooldown. That is the proper time to stretch. There is little need to kick high when you get down to the nitty-gritty even if you are following old PKA rules.

And that is an example of why I need some practice. You need to be flexible, but you need to be flexible in a dynamic way. I do very little in the way of static stretches these days but can still get a couple of fast kicks head high. Better than that, I can take my foot and slowly move it out to my chin height. Mind you, I do kick every workout.
