Not too long ago I stopped eating the regular bodybuilding diet and cut my protein intake quite low and noticed I got a lot leaner and my waist got a lot smaller even though I kept calories the same.
I was kind of wondering how this was possible since I figured protein would increase metabolism and carbs are known to be fattening.
came across a few studies of low protein diets actually causing decreased food intake, increased insulin sensitivity, increased fat loss, among other things
probably isn’t the best thing long term (or for bodybuilding, it’s more for health) but I’ll probably follow a low-zero protein diet more often now. Really I just take 1 protein shake pre or post workout, with about 30g of protein and no protein (direct sources) if I don’t workout
One con was I did notice a decrease in muscle, but I don’t bodybuild anymore so it’s not a real concern to me. Strength has been relatively the same but decreased a bit
here’s a few studies

Low protein diets produce divergent effects on energy balance
Diets deficient in protein often increase food consumption, body weight and fat mass; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We compared the effects of diets varying in protein concentrations on energy balance in obesity-prone rats. ...

Effects of low-protein diet on carbohydrate metabolism and energy expenditure - PubMed
Low-protein diets (LPD), which are prescribed for uremic patients to slow the progression of chronic renal failure, theoretically may exacerbate disorders of carbohydrate metabolism that are frequently observed in these patients because increased carbohydrate rations are required to maintain a...
