Financial gains for competing

For the bodybuilders that compete, can you advise on what kind of money could be made for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place finishers. This would never apply to me, as I’m weight training for health and to look good for me, but I’m interested to know if it’s a status thing knowing you finished in the top 3. What kind of $$ needs to be spent to get there? Do the competitions only happen in the states once a year? And/or does canada have similar contests?
TIA.

Just hit the road...... 🤦🤦🤦

You're not making any money at the local or national level.
Unless your a phenom and become a household name it will likely be a long road before anyone sees the kind of money you could live off of. Even top pros ( the smart ones )have side gigs.
The money required will depend on the level your talking and where you are. If you respond well and don't require loads of gear it will obviously be cheaper...... I would say you could expect thousands of dollars month on average, between off season, holding phases, health phases and contest prep.
I assume you've never competed. You're kinda putting the cart before the horse. This isn't really a sport you do for the money.

Good morning @Rhyno . Thanks for the info. I had a feeling most people do it for personal goals and bragging rights, (huge accomplishment for sure and well deserved) instead of $$. I’m past the age of competing. lol. Take care.

My wife won a cash prize for her overall , had not been done before that and hasn't been done since. It was a local show.
I don't know your age but I've seen guys 65+ stepping on stage.

Outside of Olympia level competitors, the actual competition side of the sport is not very lucrative. Prize winnings vary and have been on the rise, however most shows are still don’t compensate well considering the investment that’s made to even step on stage. For example the Italy pro this past weekend handed out $10,000 for 1st, $5,000 for 2nd & $2,500 for 3rd. Majority of pro bodybuilders still balance a full time career while compete. Some lucky ones can afford to make a living off sponsorships.

At the amateur level you won’t expect to win anything more some free products from event sponsors.
