I'm not a hundred percent sure I understand this paper, but it seems to point to greater autophagy when fasting, in people who exercise, v.s. people who don't exercise.
I think it means people who don't exercise at all, v.s. people who exercise regularly, and instead of taking peoples word for being regular exercisers, they tested vo2 max and other markers of fitness.
The testing method was muscle biopsies, which while unpleasant, would seem to be fairly accurate results-wise, and the results were clear; if fairly obvious.
Exercise is good for your overall health and well-being. Who knew?

Training state and skeletal muscle autophagy in response to 36 h of fasting - PubMed
The present study aimed at investigating fasting-induced responses in regulators and markers of autophagy in vastus lateralis muscle from untrained and trained human subjects. Untrained and trained subjects (based on maximum oxygen uptake, muscle citrate synthase activity, and oxidative...
