I was out cutting firewood today and my thoughts kept going back to being a kid/young and there was brands that just made dependable "Rock solid" stuff.

Old ones I can recall were craftsman tool, black and decker, May- Tag etc..

It just seems in our new world its all about the profit and not about the quality..

People will try to tell you "ya but everyone want's their stuff for cheap, so buy cheap get cheap"... I don't believe this for a second because as the quality of material went down and the assembly went over seas, nothing became cheaper... Im not reffering to the junk knock off brands from CHina.. I'm referring to May Tag appliances for example.. They used to be quality, that was slightly more expensive than the cheap competition... Now they are no longer quality and now its still just as expensive.

Things are made to last a couple years.. I highly doubt anything will hold up in quality to pass along to my kids anymore.. My grandparents passed along things like Electrolux vacums becuase the dam thing was made in the 1960 but sucked harder than any 1000$ vacum made today. I know for a fact my mother still uses a old electrolux vacum.. She's had several new ones that don't last.. She refuses to throw out the electrolux because when her newest one dies, she pulls it out and resumes with life

Look at Sorrel winter boots.. When I was a kid, I was forced to buy the big sorrel winter boots because my family had no money. Canadian Tire sold them for $30.. And holy shit did those boots last forever... Now the near same boot same company is selling them for 140$.. They did not improve by $100..

Is their any brands you guys think are still rock solid?

Harley bikes

Harleys were never reliable bikes, that’s what makes them so much cooler than rest. You have to a be a real man to own one cause you gotta generally know how to fix it lol. No ear studded ban buns can figure it out. I think Honda’s and Yamis are undespitable the more reliable bikes though, and I’m a Harley guy myself.

carharts are definitely heavy duty, but every pair I’ve always got always rips in the crotch pretty quick. You hit it on the head with Milwaukee tools though. They are the shit for sure. Very powerful and reliable. I’ve literally taken the rear end out of a ford 1/2 ton with just the 3/8 electric impact, was super impressed by the power. Dropped it off the top of a semi trailer once and thought I broke it for sure, but barely scratched it lol.

Yes i agree hondas and Yamahas are more reilable but I don't consider them bikes...lol
I drove the piss outta my harley and never changed a thing except performance parts

When it comes to tool
HILTI
Nothing else.

I have the same Hilti battery pack torque gun for 7 years.
I've been taking apart TTC tunnel lines with that little 18v Gun... I've had it catch fire and smoke out.. throw some water on that bitch and get back to work.
No other company competes....
And if I FINALLY break it?
Hilti gives me a new one, no questions asked.

Csnt think of anything else made THAT rock solid

I dont expect much when buying anything anymore. The bar for quality is set so low and nobody puts customers over profit these days.

Honda
Ingersoll

Mac Tools
Sony

Weird, but I'm typing on a HP pavillion that we bought 8 years ago.. Still works great.. The letters on the key's are wearing off, but it's been a fantastic lap top.

Blame publicly traded companies and people wanting to make money for doing nothing other than buying a stock, then on the flip side want everything at a discount. The goal of a publicasly traded company is to make profit for its shareholders.

You know one of the first things I get asked when people walk on the store? What’s on special? If we say nothing but our quality is outstanding. 4/5 of new customers will buy nothing or barely nothing and leave. Will will not even chance trying something to see if it’s better. So I need to say that 2 or 3 items are on special and put signs on them, even if that’s the normal price I’d charge.

Anyhow 20 years ago $80 bought dinner a pitcher of beer. Now $120 does the same. 20 years ago has was $0.69 a litre.
You could buy a loaded truck for $35,000

Inflation and increased taxation has reduced the value of our money, plus our dollar is in the toilet. That is why it seems like you are paying the same price for a lower quality product. Because if they produced the product with the sane quality, it would be 40% more expensive and no one would buy it, except a few select people.

A few items have increased in reliability and quality though with a reduction in price and that is mainly electronics.

I agree, all these big companies are just being squeezed and forced into shitty manufacutring all for the share holders bottom dollar TODAY.. Dumbasses don't think long term profit is better than profit today.

Agreed
Deer is ridiculous now.
They've made their tractors specifically so that you cant even work on them, they fail twice a season and requires a "specialist" mechanic visit each time.. who plugs in a computer.... the. charges you 2k to fix their own programming/software fuckup.

Give me a Massey Ferg any day of the week.
I'll tear that bitch apart and put it back together in time to finish my rounds for the day.

I'd rather strap a 3 point plough to my shoulders and start walking than use a new Deer.

(They used to be AMAZING... I was Deer for life until they started screwing us)

Old John Deers are being sold for the SAME price and brand new ones now... because it will cost you less in the long run, due to being able to do your own repairs... and not pay 2k for a damn 5 minute computer visit.

Can you tell I'm frustrated? lol

I picked up a 1960’s massey super 90 for the cottage last fall. 5L Perkins diesel. Still runs strong.
somehow i doubt you will see too many 2020 tractors in use when they are 60yrs old....

ALL my inlaws farm equipement used to be Deere... They lost their shit at me when I was buying ride on mower and said I wasn't sure what brand I was going to buy lol...

Now they curse JD over and over.. like you said, every little repair is min 2-3k...

But at the same time, the inlaws LOVE the new technology that tractors are coming out with and they don't' understand new fancy tech comes expesnive and freuent repairs..
