Ok so friday my father in law was contacted by his dr after she got his bloods back to go to the hospital.
He was told he is diabetic and they had a hard time getting his blood sugar down. Think he was 130 or higher.
They did get it down today and he is being released tomorrow.
The dietitian gave him a couple of basic pages of a proper diet but it was bullshit. Plus this old fucker is not going to follow much.
So the family is asking me to try and come up with a easy to follow diet plan with foods he will eat.
I have a pretty good idea of what i think would work but looking for tips.
This guy lives on pb sandwich's, fast food and sugar snacks. Loves fully loaded coke and orange juice. That is all this guy drinks.
I dont see this going well to be honest, so any advice for people dealing or know people dealing with type 2 would be great.

Honestly man I'm sorry to say but it sounds like an impossible job. If he just indulged in fast food or too much bread there'd be tricks but he will have to learn how to eat all over again. He's not even eating food now it's just mainlining sugar. Cutting out the liquid carbs will be a huge help though, if he can switch to water and or coffee it might be the biggest tip. Pounding back liquid Sugar is just the worst of the worst. Before a meal during a meal after a meal it's just way too easy to drink 300g of carbs in an hour. They act fast and take no effort to digest and hit the blood stream. I'm sure more guys have better advice I'd think @animal-inside will have some advice. Best of luck brother, I'm thinking he needs less of a dietician and more of an exorcist or addiction counselor. Lol. All jokes aside though that's a lot of ground to cover, I'd say if he wants to save his life and is 100 % committed he can do it. Exercise, high protein high fiber diet,

If you have time listen to this, it's very informative and lots of tips on helping with cravings and shit

Ya his wife died a couple years back and that made his diet go from bad to worse.
Fucker is so picky about everything too. Wont even try a cookie if he knows it was made with splenda instead of sugar.

I do have a good grasp on nutrition as ive been doing this for 27 years and i started at 325lbs but getting a stupid old man to follow anything is going to be rough

Sorry @storman - will he eat sardines or does he like fish (no work or cooking to sardines)? Any protein food sources he will start eating to slow down his digestion and spikes?
I know you mentioned what he drinks but there is a product called Kefir and if you buy the strawberry or flavoured kind, it is delicious. Just read the label - make sure if contains a lot of probiotics.
No major work to that change, just having a glass in the morning or with a meal. You already know all the info but it sounds like you need to find something he really likes and will help balance his blood sugar.
Sounds like he is stubborn so I would be making small changes hoping for improvement.

Yea that's what I was thinking. He has to be committed to make it work. 10 minute walk after every meal makes a drastic difference in blood sugar spikes as well.

I am going to have to give him more bread then i would like but i know he will eat it. He will bitch and moan its not white bread tho.
Basically a few eggs and whole grain toast for breakfast. I eat a high protein, high fiber bread on occasion so im hoping he will like that.
A sandwich with leanish meat or low sodium deli meat (he has to keep his sodium in check too)
Meat and a potato with veggies and or salad with low sugar dressing for dinner.
Im going to give him more options for all meals but this is basically it
He keeps asking what hes going to snack on at night lol

My ex brother in law had to be airlifted to Toronto when he was moose hunting because of his heart. Dr told him quit smoking and drinking, exercise and cut out greasy foods.

He took his dog out for one long walk and decided it wasn’t for him. He figures it’s too late to make a change and might as well enjoy what he’s got left.

@storman sometimes you can’t help others and all it will do is frustrate the fuck out of you.

I like a little munchies plate for night snacks, some chunks of low fat cheese, olives, pickles, pistachios and maybe some Hungarian salami, or kielbasa.

Chocolate ice cream flavored protein powder is really nice with some milk and ice cubes. It's healthy but tastes like a delicious milkshake.

Did they give him meds like metaformin?

Not much he can do except a full keto or partial keto diet. If he's not going to do that then he will just get worse and worse..

My father uses diabetic meds like its another food group.. He's 30 years diabetic now and similar to your father in law "no one is going to tell me what to eat" and he didn't change his diet in the slightest.. So doctors have just had to keep upping his meds.. I often wonder how stuborn fucks like him would act if his meds weren't free.. I find it selfish to make everyone else pay for his severely unhelathy lifestyle

The one drug that has actually helped my father is ozpemic.. He can not treat every meal like thanksgiving anymore because he will get sick to his stomach if he over eats.. So he's lost 20 pouns,

He's gotta switch to sugar free soda and other sugar free drinks, it's the worst thing for him to be drinking sugar and that's non negotiable he has to stop he may complain but honestly coke zero is almost indistinguishable especially when you're used to drinking it. Fast food isn't the end of the world but he should look for healthier alternatives. If he doesn't want to change he will have health problems.

I would like to get him on a keto"ish" diet but theres no way he will follow it.
Its weird cause the dietitian gave him a out line of carbs and she said 60-75 grams 4 times a day. I found that to be retarded cause the fucker doesnt do shit.
My diet for him is more like 30 grams 3 times a day mixed with protein and fats. Plus what ever else he snacks on

I'm just kind of rambling on now but also quality of life comes into question. At a certain age who are we to deny someone their simple pleasures in life no matter how toxic. You'll be lucky if he actually wants to change but some old fellows are just as happy eating or drinking or smoking themselves into oblivion. Especially if his wife has already passed. I'm going through something similar with my father but for him it's blood pressure. He knows it's high and doesn't care, won't try meds it's like he doesn't really care what happens at his age.

In the end, its up to him. If he want to sneak fast food all the time then so be it. Im not going to guilt him
