Suggestions for affordable protein sources? :)

I like to eat mainly eggs and canned tuna as my protein sources.

I would eat like 10 eggs + 3 canned tuna a day on good days when I can afford all the food!

What are your choices of protein?

I don’t skimp when it comes to protein sources. Food is more than just calories. Eat quality sourced protein sources to maintain a healthy gut. That’s a very important aspect of building a physique. An unhealthy gut will lead to poor digestion and absorption of nutrients. You may be fine now, but years of slamming low quality food will catch up to you.

I eat mainly chicken breast, currently I’ve found Farm boy to be the best quality. It even beats my local butcher. I think it’s 8.99/lb when it’s not on sale. Besides that I’ll eat wild sockeye (unfortunately have to buy it frozen most of the year because you’ll only find it fresh seasonally). If I’m doing beef, I’ve found grass fed to be worth it.

I know this doesn’t really answer your question, but it think you should really consider investing in higher quality if you could make it happen.

Yep, Farm boys chicken is not pumped with water, unlike most places. I havn’t checked their price here. They are wsy over priced on beef though.

I have always wondered why people would buy the cheapest chicken they could find, the pumped stuff has about 20% less protein per pound raw, so you need to eat 20% more, and that negates any price savings, and now you are getting extra sodium and soy protein sometimes.

As a poor student, I got you.

Buy by the whole chicken. Buy 2 weeks worth at a time. Take a sunday afternoon to clean them all up, cook enough for a few days and freeze the rest.

Fattier ground beef in a tube. Not luxury, not appetizing, but protein. Strain it if you’re worried about the fat content. If you’re extra, run it under hot water, less fat but also no flavour.

White fish bought local is both cheaper if bought with cash (no taxes for the fisherman,) and also super fresh usually.

Plan your shopping, look at the flyers around town. $2.50/lbs chicken breast 1 day flash sale? Fill the freezer.

Pork is your best friend. Pork roasts are often on sale. Throw it in a slow cooker and boom, effortless meat for meals.

Lastly, beans man. A can of beans can be as cheap as $0.99, and packed with protein.

Living on a budget is tough brother I get it. Quality unfortunately can’t be chosen over quantity in my case, so I just make do with what I can.

Eggs, tuna, ground chicken/turkey/beef, pork chops.
Protien powder in larger quantity purchases.
Eggs and protien powder are probably the cheapest imo.

Tube ground is bone scrapings, eat about 15% more to get the same amount of protein as normal ground beef.
The lean content mauy be right, but bone skin tissue is considered lean.

Sucks that food is so expensive and even more so now a days, but I try to eat as much local farm fed non antibiotic and hormone free protein as I can. Wild caught Salmon. Farm fresh eggs. I like farm boy as well for store bought chicken. Grass fed beef etc now on a budget I'd have to say eggs protein powder and stock up when the sales are right.

Organic eggs chicken and bulk lean ground beef are thee best. I buy from huderites hard to beat quality and pricing.

Honestly the $8 chicken and bulk markdown ground beef tube packs at Costco are sweet as is the fair life protein(good luck buy lots) and Optimum nutrition whey gold.

interesting. i knew there has to be some shit in there. at $3/kg tho… hard to beat outside buying bulk

It’s not meat , but when I was a young guy like in my early 20s I would mix beans and lentils .
Lentils is like 60g carbs per cup and 20 grams protein and black beans is like the same carbs I think and maybe 18 grams of protein I would have to double check it’s been a long time , but a meal like that costs about 50 cents all in .

I buy whatever beef roast is on sale that week. If its a cut I really like, I buy 3 or 4.
I buy the $15 packs of chicken breast that are all the same price and I pick the biggest ones. Theres a big difference between 700 grams and 1050 grams for the same price.
I buy a big pack of lean hamburger.
Canned Kipper snacks, mussels, oysters, tuna I buy huge bulk packs off amazon. Sometimes 50 at a time.
Lots of whole eggs and lactose free microfiltered choc milk..haha
Mre protein powder which is beef, chicken, salmon, egg, etc

If you can afford a deep freeze, find a farmer who is close enough you can buy a 1/4 - 1/2 of a cow and free range chickens. Check the farm out to make sure the chickens are truly free range as the taste is much better for the meat and I eat eggs like I drink coffee. We eat a lot of chicken but I can't get down too much of the shit chicken they sell in the grocery stores - I have to cook it in something and try to make it tender.
Think about digestion and what starts digestion - and how your body will digest protein (fast and slow). If you don't understand digestion - look it up on google and start reading on quick and fast digested sources because it matters. My post meal is usually eggs and I don't just eat egg whites - they are a great food and the choline in the yolk is great for the liver.
Eggs are easily digested and it is easy to scramble 6 eggs in 5 minutes.
I eat a lot of red meat but I know where and who it comes from - the farmer up the road. I don't think it is as good a source as real food but sometimes I will have a Vega Sport protein drink because it is convenient. I use this brand because others cause stomach issues.

Nuts are full of healthy fats and a decent amount of protein but look up the macros - they are not all equal. Almonds and walnuts are two of my favourite.

I will periodically make a big bowl of lentils, some left over meats, and mix it with rice - throw some veggies in if you like and you have multiple meals in the fidge for 4-5 days. I love lentils but be aware they full of carbs too and added to white rice you are getting a lot of carbs. If your serious about this - get a calculator and look up what your eating and try to make sure your macro balance / calories meets your goals.

Just my opinion but if you rely on whey or protein powder for your protein you won't grow near as much as if you get it from beeg, eggs, real food, etc. Nothing against a person who has a protein drink after a workout but it should not be your main source of protein. For people who say I drink my calories because of the PED's making me sick - drop those PED's and find ones that don't and eat real food. @Funnyman has probably forgot more than most know and from what I am told is very reasonable in price. He is the main trainer here and from reading his posts, for what it is worth, he has done it all and I wouldn't hesitate to reach out and ask for a price on what you need.
He has helped many here.

Searching around I found 5lb containers of Casein for $30 and Whey for $20 so I loaded up. Kijiji believe it or not for some of it!! My belief in "Best Before Date" depends on what the item is. For protein powder I believe it's just a suggestion 😉
