Does anyone have work erhic anymore, fuck irs frustrating cleaning up work for a whole other crew. Yesterday I spent the whole day redoing work that was signed off just a few days ago. Everything I pull apart lately is missing pieces or together wrong. Just useless workers and lazy as fuck. Am I the only one with this issue? It would actually be easier for me to just do all the work myself then have others fuck it up and me fix it anyways. Ive even heard the other guys say tbey cant fire you for going to slow. But they also do a shit job. Fuck its frustrating. Put them in the office if they cant handle the work on the tools...lol

Yes its annoying
I treat them good, they like me and try to do a good job, but I get tired of the 90% work completion.
For example, and really its not that bad, but they will empty the jerky rack, but don't unload the racks so the next guy has to. Its multiple things like that that after a while drives me nuts.

Yes small things but they irritate.

I have notice work ethic has declined in the last few decades. It takes 30% more staff to do the same work.

Anyhow I cannot wait to retire, between gov't over regulation. the super picky customers (right now its bad because people are bitchy) and staff I've hit my limit. If I could do it all over again, I would do what Ironwill did. Work for a big corporation and make sure I got educated enough to be in demand. But hindsight is 20/20.

Btw you can fire someone for anything you want. Just don't tell them the reason,. You laid them off because its slow. Doesn't matter if it isn't slow or not. Yes you have to pay termination pay, but most of the time its worth it to get rid of them. You want to smarten up the crew, fire the worst one (or the one that is waking around thinking they are unfireable) and then mention that you laid him off because it was obvious he didn't want to be there, so you helped him out. That you don't want people who don't really want to be there. Pay the termination pay so you don't have issues.

Anyhow the rest shit their pants and smarten up. Yes its mean, but sometimes you gotta get rid of the bad apples.

Btw it drives my wife nuts. I tell her there is not point in getting upset. All we can do is get them the best we can, but they will never be perfect. If they were they would own their own business or be high up someplace instead of working for me, lol. Drinking helps, lol

Omg I couldn't imagine if I owned the company. That must be a struggle. As bad as it sounds I would probably get rid of them all and just do it all myself after what I found yesterday. I grew up in NB where there would be 40 guys fighting for a slightly higher then min wage, so if you were useless, you just didn't make it. I think more people need to be fired for performance and maybe it would be a wake up call. Like you say sobate its hard to just get rid of people noadays, everyone thinks they are protected.

100% the new breed of worker is increasingly more and more useless, I wouldnt trust 9/10 newer workers to complete simple tasks, I cannot imagine being an owner of a business having to deal with this half asses breed of employee

I have zero problems getting rid of someone. I hate firing people, but if it is at that point they have fired themselves. My thought is, if you are only at my shop to put in time for a check and couldn’t give a shit about the job, then go away, someone will fill your shoes that does.

I have fired people who thought they were untouchable before because they run around talking like they will never be fired and do a shit job, which is a bad example to the rest. You should see the way work performance increases after the shit disturber is gone, lol. The Bad attitude employees wreck the whole atmosphere.

Usually my first step it to give a note. I will write a note, explaining what has to be fixed and what I like about them, and explain that when I give notes, it means this is the end, that things need to change.

If that doesn’t work all you have to do it give them a permenant lay off and pay termination pay. I know paying termination pay sucks, but when you do, they have no recourse to come back at you thru the labour board. Plus they don’t shit talk your business. That simple, you can fire someone for any reason. But like I said, do not tell them why they are being terminated, because they can use it against you. All I say is that I had to lay someone off, and this is a permanent lay off. Thats it. Then to the rest of the staff you mention you laid off ”Doug” because he wasn’t needed and didn’t really want to be at the shop, and it was obvious by his work ethic. If it gets back to him that you said that he won’t do shit., because he knows he didn’t want ot be their either. I don’t bitch about them or bad mouth them, just what I said.

In the old days, I would tell them exactly why I was terminating them, to help them at the next job, but I had one girl cause shit for me so I decided to never do that again. She wrecked it for numerous people. Sometimes people don’t understand what they are really like until its pointed out to them.

You need to take control of the situation and lead or the crap you put up with will never change. Talk to the boss. He or she has to do something about this. Having to take care of these situations as an owner sucks, but it’s part of the job and you just suck it up and do it. If not morale will decline, good employees will leave.

Being an owner is a tough gig, but in all reality, its not that bad. Your destiny is yours. Never have to worried about being fired. And your effort is more proportionally paid.

There are good ones, but you need to find them and help mentor them.
Lately only 1-4 students I hire I keep after the first day. Their parents and school have failed to teach them any work ethic.

Work ethic pride in your work intigrity all somewhat rare to see now

I still remember how it felt to fire my first staff member. It’s exactly like asking a girl to be your girlfriend. You know the outcome, but you still worry about if doesn’t go your way.

90% knew it was going to happen and it’s simple. Only had one tear off his shirt to fight, but got frazzled when I started laughing and told him to put it back on and just leave. Had a couple lay on the ground freaking out, moaning about what are they going to do now, and I’m thinking, if you showed up on time and did your job, you wouldn’t be worried about this right now.

At my Edmonton shop my desk was right at the back door, I’d wait till they walked out the door, then say, hey, want to talk to you for a minute, say my piece (I am always really nice about it) and then could close the door. Here I have a hallway, and I have to usher them out, it ackward.

Its quite a shame nowadays seeing the average persons work ethic. I've found over the years the person who has the best work ethic is often the one who gets no recognition and the ones who are lazy and tardy are the ones who are noticed the quickest and most often. Ive worked and left a couple companies for just that reason. If they're not going to reward ( or at least recognize) the ones who never miss a day, are productive and reliable then they really can't complain about shitty workers imo

I worked the railroad for a long time. The railroad is no joke that is where men are separated from boys. If you can’t work 18 hours straight with no lunch breaks we ate you for breakfast .
When I moved to the oilfield I moved up the ladder real fast. Because I don’t know how to be useless.
I spent half my life swinging a sledge hammer and pulling ties.
When I start a job I look for their best guy, amd than I just do double what he does.
Always make yourself useful.
When I quit my last job a few months ago they were literally begging me to come back offered me a twenty percent wage raise. Nope fuck that mental health is more important.
I have a hard time working with other people because unless they are an animal like me they just slow me down amd I don’t have time to hold peoples hands and definitely not the patience

Laziness has become an epidemic, I was on a field tour with our Director yesterday and we talked about how we are changing to a more digital company because that's how the workforce is going.

people don't want to do hard work but will grumble when wages drop because we need to go to autonomous equipment to keep the same production.

Ive been a construction foreman for over 10 years now and every year it get worse.
No disrespect to the younger guys here but i would rather hire someone in their mid 30's or above then someone in their early 20's.
Got worse as we turned union a few years back. Now its just painful. Miss the days when harder working guys made more money then the others.

In the trades it’s really bad right now. Companies are over paying to get b and c teamers.

Im reaching my end so meh, but shits going to get really bad here.

Thank god Trudeau is going to give everyone two thousand a month so no one has to work. 🤦‍♂️

One of my biggest knock against unions was I had a ton of know how and training but the shit stick next to me gets paid the same. FFS.

There are no good ones here in America!

I pulled our crew in the office this morning and straightened them out. Basically told them i dont mind doing all the work. But if they are gonna slack off and sign shit off thats not done or done properly we could lose the contract. Which means guys will be laid off, they know and I know it wont be me. I could see it in their eyes it sunk in.

I Manager company all by myself.

I pretty much do all of this!

I hired a company for landscaping but I always have to be on their case and do the job for them sometimes. Doing winter I was paying them monthly to do edging, blowing and weed control every other week and in the summer they come once a week to do all of that and cut grass which they don’t do that in the winter. This past winter the landscaper only came out to do blowing they did not do edging or weed control 😭 they additionally supposed to cut bushes and trees eight times a year. I have gone and cut the trees myself and control the weeds.

I have done exterminations myself due to other companies overcharge.

I had to install pine straw & pine mini nuggets all through out the community’s by myself, this last time I had friends from church came out to help me 🙏

I purchased the flowers and maintained annually for community’s flowerbeds, by the way my flowers in front of my yard look like s*** because I don’t have the time for myself and my flowerbed!

When I first took over the community’s I had hired a company to clean out retention areas, but I was the one that was stock cleaning afterwards, three times last year and once this year, the landscapers did do with for me on April 15th Friday for my birthday 🙏🙏🙏

I did hire a company for termite exterminating all throughout the community.

I had hired a company for mole removal’s, they did not take care of the mole issue so I had to remove them myself, they are back again this year 😩

I have hired companies to do repairs like this for example fence repair’s, roof repair’s, parking striping, exterior repairs & paint, interior home repairs from roof leak’s and roof, gutters & downspouts cleaning.

I have to maintain premium Insurance on all three property’s.

I manage website’s to notify homeowners on news, announcements, rules and important meetings.

I have to change mailboxes locks every-time a new homeowner moves in.

I have to file documents through county clerk of courts.

Annually, I do DOS/Annual Registration & update’s.

I have to maintain Irrigation/H20 and electrical power.

Annually, I do tax preparation. IRS, Rev.

Annually, I have to have fire marshals to come out to do fire sprinkler maintenance in all the interior homes, that is a nightmare 😩 from the homeowners. They do not seem or comprehend that it is for their own safety 🤷‍♀️

I additionally deal with delinquent dues, closing’s, lien’s, collecting homeowners dues, enforcing laws & codes..

Plus I work with very stupid lawyers!!

I do all of this with my bone disintegration and other health problems 😭

I pray a lot and sometimes I do come here to get it out of my chest because it can be very overwhelming doing it all by myself 😭😭😭

If I forgot to mention something, I’ll probably come back and refresh this page because I feel like I’m forgetting something.

In the summer I open up the pool and maintain the pool, honestly that’s the worst one in one of my communities, because every week it seems like someone poops in it and I have to shut it down for a week to sanitize it!!
