Melatonin and it's protective abilities

A somewhat long read. I posted another article showing it did better that NAC for tylenol toxicity previously. You will read some of the drugs used by BB'ers mentioned in this article and the positive effects of melatonin. It is up to you if you think it is worth while, but based on my research it is a positive supplement for many toxic substances both during administration and for healing.

Great read, thanks. I take it from time to time...
I know there is concern that if you take it your body will stop making it naturally - much like testosterone and other hormones. I take the dual action (delayed release) 5 mg a day and have the 10 mg version as well vs. taking a sleeping medication periodically. I have low dose Remeron for days I can't sleep as well. I have run out of melatonin and never had a problem falling asleep or staying asleep.
It is an excellent treatment for multiple eye disorders as well and did better than topical steroids for many eye issues (multiple studies). One of my protection dogs has Pannus which is supposed to progressively get worse inevitably ending in blindness. They want him on prednisolone and cyclosporine (drop of each in the morning and night). This disease does not get better - it always gets worse. He sees a specialist in another province every 6 months.
I put my buddy on 10 mg of melatonin (he is 130 lbs), vitamin c and e with his meals and 6 months later he visited the ophthalmologist. She said one eye completely cleared up and the other was 50% better. She told me she has never seen this disease regress.

I will shut up now - I can talk about my dogs all day. They cost me a fortune but no one would ever break into my house or come on my property without my permission and repay it with more enjoyment and love than I deserve.

No doubt it also works on dogs, just like several other human medication (benadryl, probiotics, immodium,etc)... We give a ''calming aid'' for our dog sometimes which contains melatonin ()
Glad it worked to heal your buddy bro... hopefully never happens but if anything happen to our we'll def try to up the melatonin! Humans don't deserve dogs, they're just too amazing.

Thanks for the post GR! My good friend has fatty liver and I've got him started on TUDCA but will have him look in adding melatonin in down the road as well.
Morning @flexappeal - does he have mild, moderate, or severe fatty liver? Elevated liver enzymes?

As much as I think melatonin is great, If I had to pick one supplement for your liver over all others it would be Sam-e (take 1200 mg a day if your an average sized person). If he is already on mood altering medication for depression or anxiety - should probably consult his doc as it is a scrip medication for depression in some countries. its great for arthritis related pain as well. The damn stuff costs a fortune in Canada if your a big person and take 1600 mg a day but you can get 400 mg tabs (30 pills) at Vitacost for approx $13 US.
All the vets I know tell me it is the number one 'prescription' for almost all liver ailments that don't require surgery. I often look to what docs give our animals friends because they have more leniency making recommendations.
Best of luck to your friend!

I’m curious. Do you take melatonin during the day or just before bed ?

Will it make you more “tired” if taken during the day ?

On a side note GF got up at 4 am to put the turkey in the oven and it’s starting to smell really good. 🤤🤤

Just at night before bed but I know people who take it during the day due to shift work. There are a few studies floating around that indicate melatonin at night decrease your risk of cancer but taken during the day it increases your risk. Don't take my comment wrong - I don't think taking a few mg's in the day is going to give you cancer and I take all studies with a grain of salt.
No, it never makes me groggy the next day even at 10 mg in the delayed release form but I started at 1 mg and increased over time.

It is well studied as an added treatment for cancer with conventional treatments and studies indicate it vastly increased their general outlook and mood during treatment. Some of those studies instructed the patients to take melatonin during the day and night.

The more I read about melatonin the more I think it is an excellent supplement. The only negative I can find is the unknowns for long term usage.

At 4 AM - did you put the turkey in her oven lol?

I’m going to add a small dose of melatonin to my before bed vitamins. I’ll report back any changes.

Just an FYI for anyone with sleep issues. I’ve started again taking magnesium before bed and find my quality of sleep is better.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09291016.2021.1899485 - showed better survival rates with 20 mg of melatonin at night.

https://addon.life/2020/06/24/melatonin-cancer/

https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/737554 - help with uveitis. I can't find the study but one indicates it performed better than prednisolone.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12823615/ - animal study showing it performed better than NAC and Vitamin E for acetaminophen toxicity. The dosage is nuts though. For a guy my size I would be taking over 1000 mg's.

Long story short - like aspirin I weigh the risk vs. reward and take both multiple times a week.

I honestly don’t know as he just said he has fatty liver but I will inquire further and look into Sam e. I’ll assume that his numbers must have gone up because I mentioned TUDCA at least a year ago and he just recently decided to take my advice.
