Let's build a lab :)

Alright fellas, Im tired of using a chunk of my kitchen to brew. Though I've never had any sterility issues, I am paranoid as shit, and it not being an isolated system drives me crazy - I do dumb shit like rush dry cycles to expose them to the elements for shorter times (I mention this because I rushed a dry cycle on my filter, and some condensation in tiny bit of tubing that connected it to my bottle top ruined a big deca brew!)

So, I've got the following:

a tabletop vacuum pump
Hotplate with magnetic stirrer
Glassware (other than my media bottle and beakers I'm ready to replace it all though)

I'm looking to get an autoclave
New filter and bottles (if anyone has a source that has all the parts I need for a top bottle negative pressure set up that would be cool - I hate scavenging random bits here and there, have to end up hosing inlets together and shit).

Stainless steel counter the easiest to work with?
Linoleum flooring good?

Stainless is the easiest to clean, but a normal arborite counter top if it has no cracks will do the job.
id go buy some quat sanitizer. Will kill 99% of bacteria.
You’ll be able to find it at a cleaning supply wholesaler.

unless you decide to mix your gear on the floor, as long as it’s clean, doesn't matter.

First off. Where they hell have you been ?

I think a lab should always go in a grungy basement and everything should be mixed in an old cracked harvest gold bathtub.
half the UGL's out there are I'm pretty sure. I actually know a gentleman who is the sloppiest fucking cook ever. Wipes down his stove-top, preheats a burner. Step one. Moving forward, he pulls his beaker out of the oven (the one fucking proper thing he does lmao). That was step two in its entirety. He then chucks his powder in, solvents, stirs er up, and forces em through a filter into vials right there. lmfao, thank GOD this guy only cooked for himself, but he's been doing this for 14 years or so and has never had a problem lmao. No gloves, no mask, no anything.

I was struggling with some shit, hit some dark places, but I'd been sort of circling the drain for a long time, so really it was inevitable and needed to happen so that I could come out the other side.

If there is one thing to invest money in, it is a biological safety cabinet or a room with a hepa filter inlet and a fan blowing out. Also throw out sterile suites or a reuseable rubber one.

Oh yes, absolutely! They actually look fairly reasonably affordable. I haven't looked at sourcing one too hard yet though. It'll be one of my first purchases.

I am a MASSIVE nerd, and I already have a hobby computer and electronics lab, and what I'd REALLY like to set up is something I saw when I was in highschool. Our school got like millions of dollars to build a modern science department, so the chemistry section was one absolutely MASSIVE lab, with 8 modular "mini labs" coming off of it. The classrooms were attached to lab in the same way. It was pretty cool actually, wish I realized it at the time lmao. ANYWAY, this was like 2002, and I would absolutely love to have a set up like one of those modular labs. I'd be in there doing shit all the time, not even gear related lol

you are hilarious, but unfortunately this is the case with some unscrupulous labs out there
