TIME TO PUT YOUR EGO TO REST AS YOU AGE

He is bang on. This is the advice I'm trying to implement now to get ahead of myself.
Still doing squats, hacks, etc, but they're getting lighter and lighter.

Once you pass 40 those injuries in your past will catch up. I know mine are. I'm a bit afraid of what's going to happen as time rolls on with my lower back, shoulder, ankle, and knees.

Never surrender-unless of course it is advantageous. LOL- I am 70 yrs-have multiple nagging and many times painful injuries to many parts of my body' I change exercises as necessary and there are days to be honest that I can hardly train but I love weights/exercise and the self challenge.I have for the last 30 yrs trained 4 sets of 3-5 reps/ 4 sets in the 8-12 rep range and 4 drop sets in the 15 rep range-each a different exercise for the given muscle group-4 min rest on heavy//90 sec on middle range and no rest on drop set[1-2 sec to pull pin..lol.Usually 2 muscle groups like chest and biceps /Lats and triceps/Legs and shoulders together.Sometimes once weekly-sometimes 2 x weekly..Has worked well for me consistantly and I see no reason to change in the future decades. The weights are heavier than most young ones at the gym except where I have major functional issues

This is good advice. It really is a mental game though. I work out alone at home, and still let ego get the best of me. 😔

BOOOOOOOO!
Hahahahaha. You will understand once you get to that age. I am 61 and I had my day at lifting full out and heavy. Now I lift for fitness and making my body feel good... that's it.

Everyone is right here. You have to find your own way following your own goals and desires. A have chosen to ease of the heavy lifting quite a bit as I have done my share and it does not excite me as much any more. I spend more time working out on my wave bag daily and I enjoy this a lot. Lifting heavy and going hard is not ego, its fun, I use to love it and I didn't give a shit what the people thought in the gym, most of them were pussies anyway as they did not lift hard enough to cause any cardio or muscle growth. If they wanted to think I had an ego... that is up to them... all I was doing was enjoying my self

I am/was a 500lb bench presser but wear and tear has gotten to me and i may be done with bench now. But when i get back to the hammer strength incline press, im still going to put 5 or 6 plates a side and go nuts.
I believe you can still be a beast as you age but you have to adjust with your body

that is great weight. Yep wear and tear gets in there then you have to adjust. I am a big advocate of train what isn't hurting.

I have been at "that age" for a while now but fuck I have a hard time accepting this. As you and others have mentioned heavy is where the fun is, I get bored out of my skull during every rep after the 8'th one or so. I know we all make jokes about getting old but I REALLY hate it, more than most I'm sure. I'm aware that I will pay for continually pushing eventually, I've already paid plenty believe me. I hope one day I will have the maturity too seek a smarter path and somehow find gratification from it but decade #6 is coming up fast and it doesn't seem like I'm trending that way. Note the tag line under my posts.

Welcome to CB btw, hope you like it here.

I hear you. I went through the same stage of hating having to reduce my poundages. I loved the mental high and the endorphine rushes I use to get after doing 3-5 deads with 495 ( torn muscle in my left shoulder bicep and pec prevent me from doing heavy back squats and benches so I steer away from them now). The feeling of conquering the weight and going beyond what you did before. What can be better in life. Well a long session of shagging is up there as well ...lol. On good days I still push the envelope from time to time. And I am a low rep person as well, I am at most a 2 to 4 rep person except for my warm ups I will push the reps to 5 until I get to my work sets, I use this on every exercise I do. I would increase sets rather than reps if I wanted more volume and I would increase rest time as I liked to work in the 80% - 90% of one rep max range for work sets. I noticed your moto and it is a good one ' You can't turn back the clock but you can wind it up again'. So now I have shifted the high intensity part of my workouts to the wave bag I spare with, I do 3-5 rounds of 3 minutes practicing bobbing, weaving, punching and kicking combinations relatively close to the bag ( if you can't throw a tight punch, jab, hook overhand or upper cut, in close then you have not studied the fine art of boxing) ... like to use a lot of knees and elbows as well. I jam up the music then go to town. Get the same rushes as when I lifted heavy.

Thanks for the welcome and I am enjoying it here ... everyone is quite knowledgeable and easy to talk to ... cheers

I am happy not being smart enough to know better... this week i spared with each of my 30 something blackbelts...could hardly get out of bed the next day but still went and did legs. And Then to the chiropractor for some preventative maintenance. I know I shouldn’t, but I’ll do it again next week.

As for weights, I don’t do fives or sixes anymore but I still do lots of 8 to 10 at the top set.

I see you liked sparring, only way to learn how to fight, and the more ppl you fight with the get better you react to different styles, counter fighters vs charge fighters, different types of combinations countering and initiation. During the time instructing TaeKwonDo our class spent say 50% of the time sparring, 30% on combination, timing and counter drills, 20% forms for promotions and warm down at the end of class. What a riot. Do you do mma, kickboxing, thai or a conbination? You have probably been at it a while considering the number of black you had. Ahhhh .... just notice your handle ... Juijitsu ... good stuff, I honestly wished I would have been introduced to that ... there was mainly TKD, boxing, judo and karate where I lived. I always wanted to be able to easily kick someone in the head even though I would most likely never use that in a real situation, mainly tournaments as you are awarded higher a higher score. Some of the best work out I have had were sparring and training for tournaments, training camps etc

Lifting does tend to go to higher reps now ...so I find it easier and effective to follow a mentzer or yates philosophy of one work set with higher reps and almost to failure ... with a couple of warm up sets.for each exercise I do.

I have been doing a form of martial arts my whole life. As a kid did Kempo and boxed....through the university years did judo and now have done Jiu Jitsu for 25+ years. Was part of an MMA program for years...was the grappling coach for 5 UFC competitors....now i teach just Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling to adults (no interest in teaching kids at this stage). Best cardio there is....

In this sense I suppose I'm fortunate in that I actually prefer higher reps. 15-20 is normal for me.

It is great cardio. I was in the best shape of my life when I was involved with rough sports. Played rugby all through university. You have achieved a lot in the martial arts area... It good to have something that you totally enjoy doing.
